For Creative Reactions // Pint of Science, Sian Wright was partnered with PhD student, Lauren Bourn (supervised by Dr Niko Kargas) who is researching the positive effects of Forest School on young people with autism. From their discussion, this sparked an interested in humanity’s co-dependency on trees for both our survival, but also our physical and social wellbeing. Using materials derived from trees, she recreated the wishing tree in a bid to bring communities together and serve as a monument of our hopes, dreams, and memories.

'Emps Piece: Stories of Lincolnshire' was an exhibition of new work by MA Fine Art students and staff from the University of Lincoln.

Emps Piece is Lincolnshire dialect for a ‘choice cut’ or 'best bit'. Usually used in connection to meat, it is applied here to both the objects and stories of Lincolnshire and to the artworks created in response. The idea for the show was partly inspired in part by Grayson Perry’s 2006 exhibition at The Collection, ’Charms of Lincolnshire’.

Inspired by the story behind the Haxey Hood, I reimagined Lady De Mowbray’s silk riding hood as a medieval open hood complete with liripipe typically worn by women during the 14th Century, the era in which the tradition is said to have originated. Thirteen buttons have been sewn to signify the original farm workers who chased the hood caught by the wind, meanwhile, red hand loomed silk was used to acknowledge the Lord and Chief Boggin who traditionally wear hunting pink (red) during the game practiced today. On display, the hood is perpetually caught in the wind giving the illusion of a ghostly presence during the exhibition.

Rebirthed from wood to paper, these ghostly apparitions transform the functional to the function-less. Dimensions approx. 40 x 50 x 60cm each.
